                   USS Wiseman Time line 1960-1974

1959 May 16

She was decommissioned and turn over to the 11 Naval District.For the next 2 years

she operated out of San Diego on Naval Reserve Training Duty with Lt.W.V. Powell

in command. Every 3rd weekend of the month a reserve cruise took her to sea for

Asw Training. The USS Wiseman reserve cruise’s took her to San Francisco,

Long Beach, and Ensenada, Mexico. The USS Wiseman was the first US Navy ship

with armament to call at Ensenada.

 

1961 Oct. 2

Wiseman was once again was recommissioned and joined the 7th Fleet, She was

overhauledat the Bethlehem Shipyard in Long Beach, Ca.

 

1962 Jan.

Wiseman was sent to patrol the coast of Vietnam. While in the Far East she

visited Hong Kong, Subic Bay and Japan. On May 19 and 20, 1962 she was

in Yokohama, Japan. 

 

1962 July 17

Wiseman returned to San Diego via Midway and Pearl Harbor. It was reported

that the USS Wiseman ran aground entering Pearl Harbor. 

 

1962Aug.1

USS Wiseman was decommissioned and placed in duty with NTR Group II

Naval Reserve. She was placed in reserve and berth at San Diego. At the

end of the year she was assigned to Reserve Destroyer Division 272 of

Reserve Destroyer Squadron 27. Remaining in service, but placed in

Reserve, she was berthed at San Diego though the rest of the 1960’s as part

of the Pacific Reserve Fleet.

 

1973 April 15

USS Wiseman DE 667 was struck from the Navy’s List and scrapped.

  Reservists Face

1-   Year Duty On

San Diego Navy Reservists aboard the destroyer Tingey and destroyer escort Wiseman will serve a one year “involuntary” tour of duty, the 11thNaval District announced yesterday. The callup, announced Friday In Washington, affects the two San Diego vessels as well as Three others in the district based at Long beach

Orders to some 200 reservists will be issued prior to Friday.the Navy announced. Some 90 high school students , who where graduated from an accelerated training program at the Naval Training Center Friday, will be among reservists in other classifications deferred for service.The high school students are part of the  Tingey’s reserve compement.

The deferment will apply under the existing order until the students are graduated from high school or drop out of school. Also eligible for deferment are college students in the Naval ROTC or other officer programs, and seamen recruits.

Authorization also has been giving to extend enlistments ofReservists who do not have 12 months service time remaining. Orders will be given to report on Oct. 2 instead of Oct 1as reported in Washington friday., the Navy said.

 

Stations Unlisted

 There where no duty stations listed in the latest Navy announcement which will affect 40 ships and 6,400 selected reserve crews throughout the nation. Other district vessels mobilizing at Long Beach are the destroyer Colahan and the destroyer escorts March and Vammen. Regular fleet personnel will fill out enlisted reserve crews where there are vacancies.according to the Navy announcement.A Navy spokesman said roughly 750 men, including 300 in San Diego, would be affected by the callup within the 11 th Naval District.
